Since 2008, TBD Telecom By Design Inc. has been helping organizations across Canada build the reliable network infrastructure needed to support today's operations and tomorrow's innovation. As a Canadian-owned telecommunications and IT infrastructure company, TBD specializes in the design, installation, and support of certified structured cabling systems that enable high-performance connectivity in increasingly complex environments.
With expertise spanning fibre-optic cabling, patch panels, wireless access points, and network certification, TBD delivers end-to-end infrastructure solutions that support business growth and digital transformation. The company also provides services for connected technologies, including surveillance systems, sensors, building systems, signage, and Hosted VoIP solutions. By working closely with IT, facilities, and real estate teams, TBD ensures that every project aligns with both technical requirements and operational objectives. Its certified installations, backed by warranties of up to 25 years, provide clients with dependable, future-ready infrastructure.
When Founder, CEO, and President Julie Kaye launched TBD Telecom By Design Inc. in 2008, she was starting a business during one of the most challenging economic periods in recent history. With a background in telecommunications, a degree in Psychology and Telecommunications Management, a shared office space, and a borrowed desk, Kaye recognized an opportunity. As she watched the city continue to grow, businesses were expanding, buildings were being constructed, and technology infrastructure requirements were increasing. She saw a gap in the market for responsive, client-focused telecommunications and technical support services and believed there was an opportunity to help organizations navigate that growth. Her vision was to build a company founded on relationships, trust, and execution.
When asked why she chose to start a business during such challenging economic times, her answer was simple:
"Why not?"
"I could see the city growing and knew there was a service need we could fill," says Kaye. "We took the opportunity to promote our services and build relationships at a time when many businesses were being cautious. Fast forward to 2026, and I see similar opportunities emerging as organizations prepare for the next wave of technological growth. The demand for stronger, smarter, and more connected infrastructure continues to evolve, and we're excited to help clients prepare for what's next.”
"We picked up the phone, had conversations, showed up, and built relationships—one client, one partner, one opportunity at a time," recalls Kaye. "Through grit, persistence, and a refusal to quit, we laid the foundation for a business built on trust and results."
While the path to entrepreneurship was not without its challenges, one principle has remained constant throughout TBD's journey: long-term success comes from becoming a true partner to clients. From the beginning, the company's approach has been simple—understand client challenges, align desired outcomes, and deliver solutions that create measurable value.
"We don't just deliver projects," says Kaye. "We become an extension of our clients' teams, helping them solve problems, meet objectives and prepare for what's next."
That client-first philosophy has fueled the company's growth. Since becoming WBE Canada Certified in 2013, TBD has expanded its footprint across Canada, supporting organizations in education, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services and other sectors. The company has successfully delivered projects for leading corporations, institutions, and public-sector organizations while cultivating long-term relationships built on trust, accountability, and performance.
Today, the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, data-driven technologies, and workplace transformation is reshaping infrastructure requirements across nearly every industry. From manufacturing and healthcare to financial services and professional services, organizations are investing in faster, more resilient and scalable network infrastructure to support increased connectivity, data demands and emerging technologies.
For TBD, these changes present a significant opportunity to help clients modernize their environments and build the foundation required for future growth. Much like the growth Kaye recognized when she launched the business in 2008, she sees today's advances in AI, connectivity and digital transformation creating the next major infrastructure opportunity for organizations across Canada.
As a long-standing member of the WBE Canada community, Kaye credits the organization with supporting both business development and professional growth. Through Supplier Innovation Days, the National Conference and networking events, TBD has gained valuable insights into procurement processes, strengthened relationships with corporate buyers and identified strategic partnership opportunities aligned with the company's expertise.
Equally important has been the opportunity to connect with and learn from other women-owned businesses. Through keynotes, panel discussions and peer-to-peer conversations, Kaye has gained perspectives on industry trends, supplier diversity and the growing impact of technology and AI on business.
After more than a decade as a certified WBE, she points to the community itself as one of the most valuable benefits.
"Many of the businesses we've met through WBE Canada have become our clients—and we've become theirs," she says. "That's the power of collaboration, connection and partnership."
Looking ahead, TBD remains focused on sustainable growth while continuing to help organizations navigate the evolving demands of AI-enabled and digitally connected environments. The company continues to strengthen its position as a trusted supplier supporting Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 organizations while remaining committed to the skilled trades, quality workmanship and customer service that have defined its success.
The question that inspired Julie Kaye nearly two decades ago—"Why not?"—continues to guide the company's vision today. Through trusted relationships, technical expertise, and a commitment to helping clients succeed, TBD Telecom By Design Inc. continues to build more than network infrastructure—it builds lasting connections.
"Our biggest triumph is the callback," says Kaye. "It's the opportunity to earn repeat business, renew a contract, and remain a trusted part of our clients' business ecosystem. That's how we know we're delivering value."
